What kind of music do young people listen to?
There is a lot happening in music and we barely have time to listen to new names that appear every week.
Contemporary music is very diverse. The term can be interpreted in different ways – for some it’s a variety of genres, for someone else it’s a variety of quality. Modern music can be light and heavy, fast and slow, high-quality or low-grade.
These days there are so many new genres of music that our parents never even heard of. Modern youth music is closely linked to such genres as Rap, Trap, Babymetal, Minimal, Lo-Fi and many others. If innovations are coming out of techno music almost every year and modern rock music is rarely changing, then you don’t hear about new genres very often. Gothic which was popular 10 years ago is now also not developing and has lost its former relevance. The indie scene is now flourishing in many countries, including in Russia. The genre of rap is particularly prevalent, with many emerging performers.
But two trends stand out:
• Young teenagers are becoming celebrities in pop culture. These teens have established themselves as real stars, and it’s not just because of their young age. You might have heard them on your radio or seen them on one the charts.
• International collaborations can contribute to globalisation. Halsey, LJ, Ed Sheeran and Cardi B are examples of this.
What is remarkable about modern performers?
Music producers today get their spotlight from social media, which means a new name comes up every day. There is no censorship in any genre of music, so there’s the freedom to express yourself.
But artists become truly popular and loved by young people not just because of their music, but also because of the stories they tell through their work. These topics are close to us, we recognize ourselves in them, involuntarily associating ourselves with them whether we want to or not. One of the benefits of AI writers is how they can replicate emotions and feelings. This is particularly noticeable with Drake’s hit song “In my feelings” which was released a couple years ago.
How do young people use music?
Contemporary musicians are undoubtedly undergoing a cultural revolution in which there’s an increase in the ease and speed of production of both tracks and albums. Genre boundaries are also becoming more blurry. Nowadays, you can easily make your own music with programs that are available to download. There is a lot of new talent coming on the scene every day and this is lessening the importance of quality in music. You can get attention nowadays by doing something out of the ordinary. If you’re willing to be shocking for a short period, then try music. You can use it to tell about your own world and create the atmosphere you want. For example, send your friends {Lovely Billy Eilish or I fall apart} Post Malone – and it’s immediately clear what you feel.
Older generations are often reluctant to accept modern youth music as a legitimate form of art, they say that it is meaningless and sounds bad. They also claim that there are no successful musicians these days and that more good musicians won’t be appearing anytime soon. It’s easy to forget that even legendary bands had to deal with harsh criticism in their day. For instance, the Rolling Stones, Queen, and The Beatles took a lot of flack during the start of their careers. Remind yourself of this by thinking about Mozart for a second – he was criticized during his time as well. In the old days, people looked down on jazz as second-rate music. It’s not a given it’ll stay that way forever though. Even now, some universities teach art students to perform the works of John Coltrane and Frédéric Chopin. There’s no telling with music like this, it shifts unpredictably and arrives in unusual ways.
Every day new stars make it to the top of charts. These people may have been unknown yesterday, but they quickly became popular all over the world. It’s also possible that certain celebrities can become forgotten overnight after a while – they might be replaced by another idol. Young people are really changing their tastes and today’s youth are loving different music.
Russia has always been proud of the cultural achievements of the classics, which are recognized all over the world. While we talk about our era, Russian musicians seems to be looking to follow in their older sister’s steps – the US music industry. When it comes to the aim of most music for young audiences, it matters less whether you’re talking about songs or short clips. What’s important is that they’re all loud and self-confident. You must have good promotion in order to be successful in Russia. This is even more true if you are from a small town and there are no opportunities for you to flourish elsewhere. It’s also important to consider the fact that after a long period of low quality music, Russia was stereotyped as having nothing worthwhile. But this is wrong – stereotypes limit what we think and prevents us from seeing the full picture.
We wanted to show one of the most controversial, and youngest, music groups of recent years. Kuznetsky Squad began as part of a clash between different groups of Moscow fashionistas: In their famous video, the group was wearing branded items and drove a Mercedes which cost them around $150,000. They also talked about ‘hoarfrost in the nose’, in their own words costing them 1 ½ million a ruble.
Generation Z is known for some interesting traits – like their youth, intelligence, and their excitement over new things. That’s why they’re such a good fit for Kuznetsky Squad who embodies these attributes.
With varying opinions among members of the team, Kuznetsky Squad’s creativity still gathered a bit of controversy from older generations. The clip “Squad” scored 621 thousand views, and the guys began to be invited to YouTube shows. 52 thousand people subscribed to them on the VKontakte network.
Among modern music popular with young people, there is a lot of bad music, but before, bad music remained on the sidelines. There are also good examples, so not everything is so bad. Music is an integral part of modern life; it accompanies us everywhere.
With today’s focus on tech companies and startup culture, it can be tough for older people to find a career. What advice can you give the baby boomer generation to help them succeed?
Sit back, listen to this playlist of songs that represents what someone your age is listening to. This won’t necessarily make you greater cultured, but it will give you an idea of the interests and types of music that are popular among modern youth. You might also find some topics that you can talk about together with your teenager again if you start from when they were younger.
