How to Install Helmet Speakers: The Ultimate Guide
In this guide, we will take you through all the steps necessary to install helmet speakers. Whether you’re installing them on a bike helmet or motorcycle helmet, these tips and tricks will help ensure that your installation is successful. This article includes information about everything from what type of tools are needed to how to safely remove old speakers from your headgear.
Installing speakers In Your Helmet
Installing speakers in your helmet is a relatively easy process. They come with their own cable and you simply mount them wherever you want to on the outside of your helmet using an adhesive strip or Velcro type material. You can then run the wire between it and any music device that has Bluetooth connectivity (most helmets do these days) and start listening to your favourite tunes while you ride.
These days you can also get helmets that come with speakers already installed, but the process is essentially the same. The big difference between these and an aftermarket speaker system is that they are usually low quality so don’t expect high definition sound or very loud volume – it’s just not possible given their size!
Inspection of the Helmet
So if you’re getting speakers installed in your existing helmet, firstly make sure that it is Bluetooth compatible. If not then these installations won’t work and you’ll need to look at buying a new one or just using some old earphones of yours instead. The good news, however, is that most helmets are so you should be able to get wireless speakers for your helmet no problem.
Removal of the Ear Pads and Speaker Units
The next thing you’ll need to do is remove your ear pads. You may be able to take them out with ease, but if not then simply cut each side of one of them (don’t cut any actual material from inside – this won’t help!) and peel it back like an envelope until you can get your hand in there. Once you have done this, simply undo the screw or whatever holds them on and remove them from the helmet. You’ll be left with a gap between each ear cover which should be enough room for your speaker to fit into – depending on its size!
Insert Adhesive, Followed By Speaker
Now all you need to do is place the adhesive strip where you want your speaker. Generally speaking, this will be on either side of one ear – with it closer to the top than the bottom so that when your helmet’s chin strap is fastened it doesn’t sit flush against your cheek!
Note The Position Required To Insert The Microphone
The final step is to insert the microphone. This should be pretty simple if you’ve followed these steps correctly – just get it inside your helmet and then pull back one of the ear pads until it comes into contact with its side (wherever that may be). Then simply use some more adhesive or a Velcro strip to keep everything in place!
Make Sure The Microphone Fits Well Within The Helmet Before Installation
One final note – many helmets have different sized ear pads for each size. So if you’re not sure that your speaker will fit or that the microphone is positioned correctly, then just try it out first! Simply remove all of the adhesive and place everything back as they were before so that you can test whether it’s right without having to do any damage to your helmet. This way you’ll know exactly whether this is the right set up for you or not before making any permanent changes to your beloved lid!
Installation Of Microphone
To install the microphone, simply remove one of your helmet’s ear pads and insert it into a gap between two covers. The microphone should be placed on the same side as the ear pad you removed.
Hide The Wires Underneath The Padding/ Lining Of Your Helmet
Alternatively, you could hide the wires underneath the padding of your helmet. This method is preferred by some people, but it can be more difficult to do and will require a bit more work on your part! However if done correctly then this option should result in an even cleaner finished look that’s really easy for anyone else to understand what’s going on and how your speakers are working.
So Why Do I Need speakers?
So why do you need these speakers? Well, firstly it means that you don’t have to wear headphones. This can be great because it allows you to listen out for traffic/horns etc and also keeps your ears free (which is especially important if like me you ride wearing glasses). It’s also pretty awesome not having wires dangling around your head and getting caught in places!
Secondly, these speakers can be great for listening to music or (my personal favourite) having a phone conversation while you’re riding. This is done using the microphone and is super easy – simply connect your iPhone/other smartphone via Bluetooth and then use Siri to call whoever it is that you want!
When I’m out on my bike in particularly busy areas I often use this to call my wife or friends who are following me in their car – it means that they can hear what’s going on too and gives us both the opportunity to communicate effectively without having to stop.
And finally, you can use it as a hands free device for your phone! This is great if, like me, your job means that you’re often on the move and need quick access to important numbers quickly – I’ve already mentioned Siri but there are also loads of apps available which allow you to do this too with different services.
FAQs
Are helmet speakers legal?
Helmet speakers are legal in most states and countries provided the motorcycle rider or driver does not wear a helmet while operating their vehicle. Helmets are required to protect the driver or rider from injuries if they were involved in an accident. Therefore, drivers and riders should never operate their motorcycle while wearing a helmet with speakers installed as this defeats the purpose of protective headgear.
Where should a microphone be placed on a helmet?
The best place for a microphone is on the front of your helmet. A second option would be to attach it to one side or top, depending on which sounds better and what you prefer.
You can also attach a microphone to the strap of your helmet. This will allow you to pick up more ambient noise and less wind noise, but may cause feedback issues if it is too close to the mouthpiece. Another option would be attaching it directly on top of one side or the other near where the mouthpiece goes into your mouth.
As you can tell, there are many possible placements your microphone could have on your helmet that would be beneficial to recording quality audio of your ride. The best way to test where it is best for you is just by trying different locations and see which one works the best!
